The North American Professional Security Officer's Association (NAPSOA) revealed a new look for the association's website, located at http://www.napsoa.com. The website utilizes Joomla as a content management system, showcasing the abilities of the product to deliver a rich, customized, and easy to use community-based website.
Joomla, released under the GNU Public License (Version 1.0), demonstrates that by utilizing open-source software professional results can be obtained without extensive licensing fees. The Joomla software package and its add-ons which power the NAPSOA site is free, even for commercial use.
The Association's website is being deployed by NAPSOA, Incorporated Information Technology branch, NAPSOA Cityscape Solutions. Nathan Corbier, a NAPSOA member and state advisor, is the Managing Director of Cityscape Solutions. When asked about the previous NAPSOA site and the new website, he shared with us his vision for the NAPSOA web presence, and how Joomla will allow that vision to become reality.
"First, with the old site, updating content was extremely difficult. You required having access to either the HTML source, or you required access to the hosting provider's software. Due to the operational security issues of sharing one set of access credentials, it meant a lot of scheduling for password changes, making sure things were secure during hand-offs to edit the website...
But, with Joomla, content creation is easy. Everyone has their own user account. I'm typing this up in the TinyMCE editor, part of Joomla, and it'll be integrated into the story when it?s received. From there, another user submits it for editing, and after that, it?s published on our main page, our Association News category, and our archive when the time comes.
With this, state advisors can create state-specific pages without having to know HTML, CSS, or any of the rest of it. And those that do can incorporate HTML and CSS into their content with ease. Joomla is scalable.
There's a lot to do with Joomla, and a bit of a learning curve for our incoming users who submit content and participate. However, for those who just sit back and read, the experience is pain-free and easy. And for those of us who do submit content... Between Joomla's web-based help, instruction manual, and intuitive interface, it'll become second nature in no time."
NAPSOA utilizes its website to conduct activities, share information and resources, and participate in forum and real-time conversation between members. NAPSOA is a professional security officer's association working to improve the security industry through training, standards, and political action.
